The Olympus wraps candies in traditional twist-wraps with an inner flow-wrap for protection against oxygen. This not only prolongs the shelf-life of confectionery products, but also has the potential to open up markets with underdeveloped cold chain infrastructures, such as Asia and Africa.
“Products that can’t normally be distributed in these regions due to the risk of damage can now be transported via an ambient,” explains Marchioni.
Operating at speeds of up to 1,000ppm, the continuous motion machine also saves on film costs through a narrower side seal on the flow-wrap and heat sealing.
Creating a seal through heat sealing rather than cold sealing was a major breakthrough, as this enables the use of cheaper materials (heat sealable films are 40% cheaper than cold seal films) and provides full hermeticity for complete seal integrity.
“Others have tried to achieve this goal with a cold seal. We didn’t want to go down that route as cold seal films are expensive. Our solution is far more accessible,” says Marchioni.
A rotary disc feeder makes for an extremely compact footprint and efficient feeding of small sweets; its diameter is 1.5m compared to a 6 or 7m length belt feeder.
